The types of developmental disabilities that we support

Developmental disabilities are conditions that affect an individual’s physical, cognitive, communication, social, or emotional development. These disabilities typically begin during the developmental period, which includes early childhood and continue throughout a person’s life. Some examples of developmental disabilities we support include:

Intellectual Disabilities: Formerly known as mental retardation, this condition involves limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. People with intellectual disabilities may have difficulties with problem-solving, learning, and communication.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): ASD is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication, social interaction, and behaviour. Individuals with ASD may have difficulty with social cues, language, and repetitive behaviors.

Down Syndrome: Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by an extra chromosome 21. It can lead to cognitive delays and characteristic physical features.

Specific Learning Disabilities: These disabilities affect how individuals process information and learn. Examples include dyslexia (difficulty with reading), dyscalculia (difficulty with math), and dysgraphia (difficulty with writing).

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, which can impact academic and social functioning.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD): FASD refers to a range of physical, behavioral, and cognitive impairments that can occur in individuals whose mothers consumed alcohol during pregnancy.

Fragile X Syndrome: It is a genetic condition that causes intellectual disabilities, learning difficulties, and behavioural challenges.

Williams Syndrome: Williams syndrome is a genetic disorder that leads to distinctive facial features, cardiovascular issues, and cognitive difficulties, along with highly social and outgoing personalities.

Rett Syndrome: Rett syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects girls and leads to severe cognitive and physical impairments.

These are just a few examples of developmental disabilities, and there are many other conditions that can affect an individual’s development and functioning.
